Yemen is the first Middle Eastern country to benefit from Elon Musk's internet satellite service Starlink.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Musk said on Wednesday that Starlink was now accessible in Yemen. Star link delivers speedy internet connections through thousands of orbiting satellites.

Yemen’s government announced earlier this month that the Starlink satellite internet would be officially launched in the country after the government signed a deal with the company, putting an end to the Houthi militia’s long- standing monopoly on Yemen’s telecommunications sector.

The Houthis, who seized power in Yemen a decade ago, have gained control of state-run landline and mobile phone companies that produce billions of Yemeni riyals in income each year.

Yemen's government was able to overcome the Houthis' monopoly on the internet and mobile sectors by launching Aden Net, an internet company that delivers 4G internet services to government-controlled regions.

Starlink’s internet connection to Yemen is anticipated to improve the population's access to services and help international organizations there.
