The Yemeni Riyal (YER) value in the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) areas has reached another all-time low value of YER 2,187/USD by the end of January 2025, depreciating by 26 percent year-on-year and losing approximately half of its value against the US dollar (47 percent) since 2022, according to World Food Program (WFP) latest analysis..

This depreciation, the analysis added, has primarily driven local fuel and food prices to unprecedented levels in January 2025.

In January 2025, food imports through all Yemeni ports were 39 percent above the 12-month average, while fuel imports in January 2025 were 11 percent higher through Red Sea ports compared to their 12-month moving average, and imports through the southern ports of Aden and Mukalla dropped by 64 percent.

Severe levels of food deprivation (poor food consumption) remained alarming in January 2025 (34 percent in IRG areas and 35 percent in Houthi rebels areas), albeit showing a monthly decline of 14 percent in IRG areas and four percent in Houthi rebels’, WFP Food assistance in January, provided some relief to the beneficiary households in targeted districts.

The WFP analysis of food security outcome monitoring data revealed significant changes across 11 districts when comparing Q3 and Q4 of 2024. Eight districts experienced a deterioration of more than 10 percentage points in at least two food security outcome indicators, while three districts showed relative improvement. Notably, most of the districts with deteriorating conditions are located near the active line of conflict.
