The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded Sunday another visit to Tehran, where he met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi and Director-General Mohammad Alibak, as well as members of the diplomatic community based in Tehran, to discuss recent developments in Yemen and the region, according to a press release published by the envoy’s office.

During the meetings, the press release added, the Special Envoy emphasized the urgent need to de-escalate tensions and prevent further deterioration of the regional political and security landscape. Noting that Yemen has suffered over ten years of conflict, he underscored the importance of concerted international and regional efforts to support a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the conflict.

“The recent escalation that Yemen is experiencing underscores the necessity to reinforce the work to stabilize Yemen and set it on a path to a sustainable future by also addressing the regional dynamics that are at play. All relevant stakeholders need to contribute to conditions that not only can open space for mediation, but also address some of the urgent matters at hand,” said Mr. Grundberg.

The Special Envoy reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to working with all stakeholders to create the necessary conditions for dialogue, and to help ensure that regional developments do not derail the progress made toward peace in Yemen.
