Houthi rebels blocked water trucks from entering the city of Taiz through the eastern checkpoint in Al-Hawban on Saturday, local sources said, adding that this move has worsened the already serious water shortage in the city, in which no water deliveries will be allowed into Taiz from Al-Hawban area .
According to eye witnesses drivers of the trucks were stopped for hours and told not to come back. Some were even forced to pour out their water before leaving.
As of 2023, the city (Taiz) , southwestern Yemen, has an estimated population of approximately 1,000,600 residents making it the third largest city in Yemen. It has been suffering from a lack of clean water for years. Most city’s residents rely on water brought in by trucks from Al-Hawban, where wells still work. Cutting off this supply will make the crisis even worse and drive up prices.
